A thoroughly honest game-show host has placed a car (the winning prize) behind one of three doors. There is a goat (consolation prize) behind each of the other doors. You have no prior knowledge that allows you to distinguish among the doors. "First you point toward a door," he says. "Then I'll open one of the other doors to reveal a goat. After I've shown you the goat, you make your final choice whether to stick with your initial choice of door, or to switch to the remaining door. You win whatever is behind the door."

Should you switch doors? Explain.

Solution

Yes, because switching doors will increase your chances of winning from 33.33% to 66.66%.

At the beginning when all three doors are closed, your choice has a 33.33% chance of winning. When the game show host reveals a door with goat, now in this new scenario, the remaining door (the one you're thinking of switching to) now has a 100% - 33.33% = 66.66%.

The wrong idea some people have, is that once the host opens a door containing a goat, the other two remaining doors each will each have 50% chance of winning, and thus it makes no difference whether you switch or not.

This is false because assuming the host knows what is behind each door, always opens a door revealing a goat, and always makes the offer to switch, the host's actions do not affect the probability of the player initially choosing the car (33.33%). The future cannot change the past.

To explain this in another way, the two remaining doors would indeed both have 50% chance of winning, *if* the host, began the game by immediately eliminating one of the 'bad' doors (containing a goat). If the contestant could only choose then, of course either of the two remaining doors would have 50% of winning.

But remember that the game began by the *contestant choosing* any one out of three doors, which obviously has a 33.33% chance of winning. So when subsequently the host eliminates one of the remaining doors (containing a goat), realize that the host (who knows what's behind all the doors) is naturally helping the contestant, to eliminate a confirmed 'bad' choice.

So now, the chance of winning for one of the remaining doors will naturally have to increase to take over the 'bad' door's chances. But *the door* which the contestant chose *at the beginning* (the one with 33.3% winning chance) cannot have *its* probability altered (because the door was chosen *at the beginning*, instead of  now). So this leaves only the remaining door, that must compulsorily have it's chances of winning increased, from 33.33% to 66.66%.

A man bought a chicken for $8, sold it for $9, bought it back for $10, and sold it for $11. How much profit did he make?

$2. The mathematical working is (-8) + (+9) + (-10) + (+11) = $2.

Split the story into two halves. In the 1st half, buying at $8 and selling at $9, he makes $1 profit. In the second half, buying at $9 and selling at $10, he makes another $1 profit. Hence he makes a total of $1 + $1 = $2 profit.
 
 

Three men ate dinner at a restaurant. The bill came up to $30. Each paid $10. After they left the restaurant, the manager realized there was a mistake in the bill. The bill was merely $25. He sent a waiter with $5 to pay back the 3 guys, who had gone their separate ways. As the waiter ran after the 3 guys, he realized they had split up, and he thought to himself, "How the heck am I supposed to pay each person 5/3 dollars? Heck, I'll just give each guy a dollar each, and keep $2 for myself as tips!".

So each guy paid $10 - $1 = $9. Three guys paid $9 x 3 = $27 in total. Plus the $2 the waiter kept, that's $27 + $2 = $29. What happened to the missing dollar?

There is *NO* missing dollar. In the left-hand-side of the equation, we have the manager keeping ($30 - $5) or $25. On the right-hand-side of the equation, we have the men paying ($9 x 3) minus $2 pocketed by the waiter, which is $25.

Alternative Working A

There are only two possible cases that could occur given the statements of the girls:

Case 1:  They are both insane, which would mean that Lucy must be telling the truth.  Since the only insane creature that can tell the truth is the vampire, this makes Minna a human, and since she must be lying by saying that Lucy's statement is false, this makes her an insane human.

Case 2:  They are both sane.  This could occur if Lucy's statement is a lie, which would make her either an insane human or a sane vampire.  This would mean that Minna is telling the truth, which would make her either a sane human or an insane vampire.  If Minna were an insane vampire, then her statement would be true, meaning that not both are insane.  In this case, Lucy must be a sane human, which would tell the truth; however since Lucy's statement is that they are both insane, this would be a lie in this case, so we can rule out the possibility that Minna is an insane vampire and that Lucy is a sane human (at the same time).  This leaves Minna being a sane human, which makes her statement true,  meaning that both are not insane. Lucy would therefore be a vampire (since we know that one is a vampire and one is a human) and since her statement of them both being insane would be false, she must be a sane vampire.  Since this condition agrees with the first condition in this argument, then this is the only possibility for this case.

The only possible outcomes are this:
Lucy is an insane vampire, and Minna is an insane human, or Lucy is a sane vampire, and Minna in a sane human.

In either of the cases Lucy must be a vampire, and Minna must be a human.
 

Alternative Working B

Lucy's statement: we both are insane
Minna's statement: we are not both insane.

Let us consider 4 possible scenarios, with regards to their sanity :

a) Both are insane.
In this case, Lucy tells the truth: So she must be an insane vampire. Therefore Minna is a human. But minna must be insane as well. Minna is lying when she say not both are insane. So she is an insane human, so she lies. This is logically consistent, so therefore here Lucy is an insane vampire, and Minna is an insane human.

b) Lucy is insane, Minna is sane.
In this case, Lucy is lying when she say both insane. Since Lucy is lying and insane, she must be insane human. But then Minna should be vampire then. But minna is telling the truth and is not insane. This is a logical contradiction as sane vampires do not tell the truth. So Lucy cannot be an insane human, and Minna cannot be a sane vampire.

c) Lucy is sane, Minna is insane.
Similar to (b). In this case, Lucy is lying when she say both insane. Since Lucy is lying and sane, she must be a sane vampire. But then Minna should be human then. But Minna is an insane human and yet she tells the truth, so we have a logical contradiction. So Lucy cannot be a sane vampire and Minna cannot be an insane human.

d) Both are sane.
Lucy is sane and therefore lying when she says they're both insane. So Lucy must be a sane vampire. Minna must then be the human. Minna is telling the truth when she said Lucy is incorrect. So Minna must be the sane human, which is logically consistent with her insistence that they're not both insane. Therefore here Lucy is a sane vampire, and Minna is a sane human.

Conclusion, both are either insane or both are sane. In either case, Lucy is the vampire and Minna is the human.

All religious groups, in exercising their freedom of religion, must respect the right of each individual to hold his own beliefs and to accept or not to accept any religion; not allow their members, followers, officials or clergy from acting disrespectfully towards other religions or religious groups; and not influence or incite their members to hostility or violence towards other groups, whether religious or non-religious. Any action or publication that contravenes the above constitutes a violation of the Religious Harmony Act."
 

[ Undesirable Publications Act ]

"All Publications that are determined to threaten the stability of the State, are pro-Communist, contravene moral norms, are pornographic, show excessive or gratuitous sex and violence, glamorize or promote drug use, or incite racial, religious, or linguistic animosities, constitute a violation of the Undesirable Publications Act."
