A little boy's gift to his sister Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at a hospital, I got to know a little girl named Liz who was suffering from a rare & serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion from her 5-year old brother, who had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to combat the illness. The doctor explained the situation to her young brother, and asked the little boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate thoughtfully for a moment, before taking a deep breath and saying, "Yes I'll do it if it will save her." As the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his young sister and smiled, as we all did, seeing the color returning to her cheek. Then the little boy's face grew pale and his smile faded. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, "Doctor, will I die right away?" Inspector Craig met two sisters, Lucy and Minna, both of whose sanity
and mortality he knew nothing of. The inspector's investigation is reproduced
below.
Craig (to Lucy) :Tell
me about yourselves.
Lucy : We are
both insane.
Craig (to Minna) : Is
that true?
Minna : Of course
not!
At that point, the Transylvanian police hauled a discovered vampire
past them. The vampire, struggling unsuccessfully to break free from his
captors (who had been spiritually armed by the local priest), sheepishly
called out, “Minna's insane!” Minna's face immediately turned crimson,
as she swivelled about glaring sharply at the grinning vampire, and screamed,
“You're insane!”
From this Craig was able to prove the sanity and mortality of both sisters, as well as the sanity of the convicted vampire. How did he do it?

Assume Lucy is sane and a vampire, and hence lying, which implies not both of them are insane, ie. they are both sane, or only one of them is insane. Minna could then be either a sane human (speaks the truth "of course not") or an insane human (speaks falsehood "of course not"), the former being logically consistent, and the latter inconsistent (since we began with the assunption that Lucy is sane). Deduction : If Lucy is sane and a vampire, Minna is a sane human.
Assume Lucy is insane and a vampire, and hence speaking the truth, which is that they are both insane. Because Minna protested this truth (ie. she's lying), she must therefore be either an insane human, or a sane vampire. The former is logically consistent, the latter inconsistent since we began with the assumption that Lucy is the vampire). Deduction : If Lucy is insane and a vampire, Minna is an insane human.
Assume Lucy is sane and a human, and hence speaking the truth, which is that they are both insane. This is logically inconsistent and thus rejected.

Assume Minna is sane and is a human. So she must have been speaking the truth when she said the captured vampire was insane. And if the captured vampire was insane, it means he spoke the truth when he said Mina was insane. This is logically inconsistent with our initial assumption that Mina is sane, and is thus ruled out.
Assume Minna is sane and is a vampire. So she must have been lying when she said the captured vampire was insane. And if the captured vampire was sane, it means that he must have been lying when he said Minna was insane, which means Minna is indeed sane, which is logically consistent thus far. This further means that Minna was lying when she said not both Minna and Lucy were insane. Which means that both Minna and Lucy are indeed insane, which is logically inconsistent with our initial assumption that Minna is sane, and is thus ruled out.
Assume Mina is indeed insane. Then, the captured vampire must be insane, because he told the truth. Which means Mina was speaking the truth when she said the captured vampire was insane. Which means that she must have been an insane vampire (since only insane vampires speak the truth, which she did when she said the captured vampire was insane), and couldn't have been a human (since insane humans always lie). This further means she was speaking the truth when she said not both Minna and Lucy were insane. And since Minna is indeed insane, it means Lucy must be sane. And since Lucy is sane, and she said "we are both insane", she was lying and thus must be a sane vampire.
Conclusion : Minna is an insane vampire, and Lucy is a sane vampire.
A thoroughly honest game-show host has placed a car (the winning prize) behind one of three doors. There is a goat (consolation prize) behind each of the other doors. You have no prior knowledge that allows you to distinguish among the doors. "First you point toward a door," he says. "Then I'll open one of the other doors to reveal a goat. Yes, because switching doors will increase your chances of winning from 33.33% to 66.66%.
At the beginning when all three doors are closed, your choice has a 33.33% chance of winning. When the game show host reveals a door with goat, now in this new scenario, the remaining door (the one you're thinking of switching to) now has a 100% - 33.33% = 66.66%.
The mistaken idea some people have, is that once the host opens a door containing a goat, the other two remaining doors each will each have 50% chance of winning, and thus it makes no difference whether you switch or not.
This is false because assuming the host knows what is behind each door, always opens a door revealing a goat, and always makes the offer to switch, the host's actions do not affect the probability of the player initially choosing the car (33.33%). The future cannot change the past.
To explain this in another way, the two remaining doors would indeed both have 50% chance of winning, *if* the host, began the game by immediately eliminating one of the 'bad' doors (containing a goat). If the contestant could only choose then, of course either of the two remaining doors would have 50% of winning.
But remember that the game began by the *contestant choosing* any one out of three doors, which obviously has a 33.33% chance of winning. So when subsequently the host eliminates one of the remaining doors (containing a goat), realize that the host (who knows what's behind all the doors) is naturally helping the contestant, to eliminate a confirmed 'bad' choice.
So now, the chance of winning for one of the remaining doors will naturally have to increase to take over the 'bad' door's chances. But *the door* which the contestant chose *at the beginning* (the one with 33.3% winning chance) cannot have *its* probability altered (because the door was chosen *at the beginning*, instead of now). So this leaves only the remaining door, that must compulsorily have it's chances of winning increased, from 33.33% to 66.66%.

$2. The mathematical working is (-8) + (+9) + (-10) + (+11) = $2.
Split the story into two halves. In the 1st half, buying at $8 and selling at $9, he makes $1 profit. In the second half, buying at $9 and selling at $10, he makes another $1 profit. Hence he makes a total of $1 + $1 = $2 profit.
The "Three Men & A Waiter" Riddle
Three men ate dinner at a restaurant. The bill came up to $30. Each paid $10. After they left the restaurant, the manager realized there was a mistake in the bill. The bill was merely $25. He sent a waiter with $5 to pay back the 3 guys, who had gone their separate ways. As the waiter ran after the 3 guys, he realized they had split up, and he thought to himself, "How the heck am I supposed to pay each person 5/3 dollars? Heck, I'll just give each guy a dollar each, and keep $2 for myself as tips!".
So each guy paid $10 - $1 = $9. Three guys paid $9 x 3 = $27 in total. Plus the $2 the waiter kept, that's $27 + $2 = $29. What happened to the missing dollar?

There is *NO* missing dollar. In the left-hand-side of the equation, we have the manager keeping ($30 - $5) or $25. On the right-hand-side of the equation, we have the men paying ($9 x 3) minus $2 pocketed by the waiter, which is $25.

i. exercise his/her personal freedom, discernment and discrimination to accept or reject the opinions stated or implied herein, without prejudicial influence towards or against;
