Confession : the two darlings of a hamster shown
on my banner above, aren't mine at all. The photos were taken from
this
forum thread. But they were so adorable I wanted to use and share the
photos with hamster lovers & caretakers everywhere. As long as no commercial
value is involved, and this is a sharing of a common interest (for hamsters),
I'm sure the owners (identities acknowledged below) wouldn't mind if you
would like to use these non-copyrighted photos for personal purposes or
webpages.

A Humble Suggestion to All Fellow
Hamster Owners

The following is a humble suggestion to all hamster (or other pet companion) owners. Update 30 Dec 09 :
I've found that in addition to regular hamster brand foods, in the interest of the hamsters' health, it is recommended that you, the owner, purchase a variety of *Raw* nuts/seeds from your local organic health food store (eg. NTUC FairPrice Finest), in addition to the regular hamster brand foods. I use raw pine nuts, raw sunflower seeds, raw pumpkin seeds, raw peanuts and raw flaxseeds. The simple reason being, exactly as is the case for human beings, *Raw Fats* are the single most important key to great health (and conversely, cooked/fried fats are the cause, or at least a significant exacerbating factor, of all diseases). For more information see my health section here.In the past, I used only one particular brand of hamster food. One day, it occurred to me that hamsters, being individuals like humans, would have individual taste preferences. I noticed how different hamsters preferred different foods. I now buy about 10 different brands of hamster food, and during each feeding, I give out a little bit of food from all 10 different brands. My observation and conclusion is that they're happier this way - more variety for every hamster, and different brands can satisfy different hamsters personal preferences.
So, fellow hamster (or other pet companion) owners, you might like to consider adopting this practice too. Don't worry that it'll cost 10 times more, in point of fact it actually costs the same. You're not feeding them 10x the amount of food, you're feeding them 1/10 x 10 = 1 the same amount of food.
As pet owners, we have a responsibility to provide a healthy environment for our domesticated companions to live out fulfilling lives. This suggestion is one such way to contribute to your pets well being. Afterall, you wouldn't like to be fed the same limited meal your entire life, would you? But a wide variety buffet meal, never fails to brighten your day and lift your spirits! (^_^)

Greets!
The following images are my hamsters in my Hamster Safari environment setup. I really enjoy seeing my hamsters in a more natural looking forest-like, savanna-like environment, hence the motivation for simulating a natural environment (hence so-called "Safari").
The images were taken over a period of over 2-3
years, with latest images at the top. My Safari setups are dynamic, the
placement of the wood pieces change with each replacement of bedding. If
you have any inquiries (eg. if you're interested in a similar Safari setup
- anyone can create a similar Safari setup, all the necessary components
are easily available and affordable at most pet shops) or comments, please
feel free to contact me at :
For those who might be interested in a similar setup, the wood pieces can be obtained from any aquarium shop. You can shop around for suitable bogwood (don't be too hasty to buy and settle for nondescript-looking pieces) from different aquarium shops.
I bought my wood pieces from
1) Sam's Pets & Aquarium (Marine Parade)
2) PolyArt Aquarium (Clementi)
3) C328 Aquarium (Clementi)
My hamster foods are purchased from
Pet Lovers Center (Marine Parade + VivoCity)
In 2008, I visited the Serangoon/Clementi area (I'm not intimately familiar with that area, so I can't give specific adresses) which had like over 10 aquarium and/or pet shops all within the same immediate vicinity (I don't think any other location in Singapore that many pet & aquarium shops located side by side!), and I saw a lot of beautiful artistic-looking wood pieces.
The prices for the wood pieces are extremely variable. A simple, tiny piece of wood the shop is trying to get rid of, could be only a few dollars (or free, if you're chummy with the boss and can persuade him to give it to throw it in as part of your other purchases, eg. of pet food).
However, larger, beautiful, complex, ancient tree-like, sophisticated art-like, wood pieces, can cost up to $50 or easily more, per piece. On average, I'd say $20 for decent, standard pieces. So do shop around, and if you can, check out the Serangoon area pet & aquarium shops, for their wood pieces.
Anyone who does a similar Safari setup, do email
me once your own Safari is set up, and share with me your blog URL, I'd
love to see photos of your Safari! (^_^)
.
One additional little 'bonus' you get to enjoy,
with such 'Safari' setups (that anyone interested can design and setup
for themselves), is that with each cleaning or changing of bedding, you
can play around with the wood pieces to construct another arrangement,
configuration or design. Exactly as if the wood pieces were 'lego bricks'.
This helps in the 'freshness' factor for both hamsters and owner - it's
a different 'forest' or Safari each time.
My photos actually show many different Safari setups, reflecting the different wood arrangements / configurations of those times which I took the photos. All in all, since I first started the Safari setup 3 to 4 years ago, I have changed bedding (hence the arrangment or configuration) several hundred times.
If you choose to set up a Safari of your own,
please email me your website or blog. I look forward to seeing your own
Hamster Safari! (^_^)
