The fact that the girl victim (and her boyfriend) didn't dare to resist the violent abuse in the least, tells a lot about the widespread, deep seated and entrenched fear of gangsters (and more organized crime organizations including the mafia, yakuza, black societies, etc) in many parts of the world.
