From today (29 Oct 07) to 'A' level H2 Chemistry paper 3 (5 Nov 07), I'll be posting one or more Chemistry question(s) in this thread each day. These are good practice questions that I've specially selected for my 'A' level Chemistry tuition students (I'm a 'A' level / 'O' level Chemistry & Biology tuition teacher, my webpage *here*).
If you can do ALL of the questions in this thread, correctly and all by yourself (without checking any notes), within a reasonable time allocation, you're a confirmed A grader.

Qn 1 (29 Oct 07)
Qn 2 (29 Oct 07)
A sample of 0.430g of an organic compound, which contains only carbon, hydrogen and oxygen, was burnt in excess oxygen. This combustion produced 1.10g of carbon dioxide and 0.450g of water. Given that this compound has a molar mass of about 250g, deduce its molecular formula.
Qn 3 (29 Oct 07)
One sunny day in 1955 England, a man was walking past the entrance of an abandoned coal mine. At that exact moment, the sky inexplicably became ominously dark, and the man saw lightning and heard thunder nearby, indicating that a sudden and extremely severe thunderstorm was underway. The man started walking briskly towards the coal mine, thinking he could seek shelter there. However, he never reached the entrance - only a metre away, the man collapsed and died. Suggest a plausible explanation for the events leading to this man's death, giving relevant details.
Q4 (29 Oct 07)
Explain why the solubilities of Grp II hydroxides increase down the group, while the solubilities of Grp II sulphates decrease down the group.
